Blossoms Table Runner at Sew We Quilt and a Giveaway

Tomorrow (well, really today) I'll be guest blogging at Sew We Quilt.  The wonderful Madame Samm is hosting a month of table runners and I will be sharing my Blossom Runner pattern, which is loosely based on my quilt pattern of the same name...

The runner was originally designed to use two stack of 40 (10'') squares (or a layer cake). I used lovely Ruby, by Bonnie and Camille for Moda.

So hop on over to Sew We Quilt and join the fun!

Then come back here and enter my giveway.  Did I mention that you only need 19 (10'') squares to make this runner, so with my layer cake I made two!  I'm giving away the other runner top.  Yes, you will have to quilt it yourself, but I have some neat quilting ideas posted over at Madame Samm's and it will be a really quick project!

While I was marking my runner for quilting, I encountered some really stubborn marks from my washable blue fabric pen.  They just didn't want to come out all the way.  I was eventually successful (got to love vinegar!) but it led me to wonder about other methods for marking a quilt.

So, to enter to win this giveaway leave a comment on this post telling me what method you prefer to use when marking a project.  If you prefer not to mark a project, tell me your favorite filling pattern.  No, you dont' have to have mastered it - it can just be a fun pattern you've seen.  (I'd love it if you would become a follower is you aren't already.)  Don't forget to leave me a way to contact you should you win.

The deadline to enter is Friday night and I'll post the winner on Saturday.  Also on Saturday, I'll be back with my final installment of my Easter Egg Table Topper.

Thanks again to Madame Samm for hosting her great blog. Happy sewing!
Amanda

I'm new at quilting, so I don't have a preferred method, I'm not really good yet either. I just go for swirls or whatever I can do.

Will probably use a quilting marking pen, or pencil to mark my quilts once I get to that point. Am doing quite a bit of echo quilting sewing lines, which are straight, at the moment. Don't really look forward to quilting my tops! Have not mastered machine quilting yet, and am doing it by hand mostly. Thanks for the giveaway.

I use the frixion pens but with great care as if you don't quilt right over the top you can see a slight white line on darker fabrics, they are fantastic for stitchery marking though :O) and I'm doing FMQ squiggles atm so don't need marking :O)

First, I want to say I adore your patterns and fabric! I've not seen anything of yours that isn't lovely. Your colors are always wonderful and the designs and patterns full of fun.
That being said, my dining table is calling out to have your cutie patootie runner live on it this spring. :)))
I don't mark my quilting designs. I just shoot from the hip with whatever design feels right for the quilt. But on the same token I sew quilts that are what I like to call light, airy and free spirited and can be quilted with loops, spirals, hearts, stipple etc.
Hope you have a great rest of the week!

When marking a project I have mechanical pencils with lead on it that you use for fabric - I also have used the fabric markers that are supposed to iron out. It is tough to get the lines all the way out though - you can still sometimes see them :S

Oh I just love this table runner....I use the same marking that I have always used. I use a silver pencil for all my marking...let me see if I can find one with the name....it is by Sanford - Verithin #753 metallic silver and I buy them by the box..every no and again I may use chalk but very raely since the pencil line is so thin that I nver have a problem with the thread covering it up unless I don't follow the line...I am a follwer of your blog and you are very helpful to us quilters...thanks

For marking, it depends on the quilt. Sometimes I use a fabric marker, sometimes a fabric pencil or soapstone pencil. I do a lot of stitching in the ditch lately, so no marking needed. My favorite is an all over swirl or loop, which I free hand without marking.

I use the frixion pens now. I use to use a blue marker that was suppose to wash out..it did come out but as soon as it dried it was back again, and it had run and left a water mark. Love the frixion pens so much easier...just be careful on dark fabrics - especially red, it leaves a white mark. Linda

What a wonderful runner! Thanks for the chance to win! I mark with a variety depending on the project. I use a white mechanical pencil, chalk, and the blue wash-out marker.

I am a marker junkie: so either white Sewline or Bohin which has 8 other chalk colours then there is the good old blue. Now qyulting designs: echo quilt, feather, circular but the all over squiggly one (don't cross those lines) Thanks Amanda for the table runnercan't wait to squiggle or perhaps echo. Keep designing just love them. Susan

Great tutorial, Amanda! Thanks. I'd love to have your topper top! I have black and white chalk-like pencils that I like to use for marking. Often, I can just brush it off. They're not marketed as quilting pencils. You can get them in an art supplies section.

Every time I go to mark a piece of fabric....it becomes an issue for me. I actually find it quite annoying. I must have 10 different things to use....and yet 90% of the time I have to use something with a chalk base. You do have to rinse that out....and it doesn't always come out so easily either. I wish I had the brains to discover something PERFECT.....and then I could make enough money to buy all the fabric in the world. haha.

I am afraid to quilt any of my projects. If I make a small project I stitch in the ditch but otherwise I have a wonderful lady near me who does the stitching on my big projects so I don't have a preferred method for marking but when drawing lines for triangles I use a lead pencil with a soft lead in it.

Hi Amanda,
Beautiful table runner!!! I have been using the Frixion pins lately and have had good success with the lines disappearing when I hit them with an iron. Sometimes on a flower type shape I will cut the pattern from freezer paper, iron or pin it to my top and then quilt around the pattern (this idea came from the book Mary Mashuta - Foolproof Machine Quilting).

My preferred method is not to do it - free hand quilting and I do not jive. Last time I did quilt a runner, I started at one interesection and sewed "a wave" all the way across and just kept repeating. Much easier to sew a wave than try to do a stitch in the ditch or straight line. Soctt Murkin taught us that in a class. Love this opportunity and thank you. Judy C

I use a Frixon pen. The ink disappears when heat is applied. Sometimes you can still see a faint white line after ironing but it goes away with washing. Or I will use a chalk pencil but those seem to rub off and might be gone when I get to that part of sewing.

I do have a project going right now that I'm not sure how I'm going to quilt it. I think I'm going to try some echo around the blocks and maybe some feathers in the border.

I really like the Frixion pens but have recently discovered some of the Kona solids hold an odd mark after ironing away the mark. I need to do some more investigating with them. I did some lab work on them before and the mark always washed away so I need to ensure this is the case with the Konas. Thanks for offering up a great runner.

Amanda I loved your Blossom Quilt as soon as you showed us and of course, this runner is just as beautiful. Of course, you know I love everything you have done. Thank you very much for the wonderful table runner tutorial and template.

As far as marking, I've been using the Fons & Porter Mechanical Fabric Pencil which has a ceramic lead.
http://www.joann.com/fons-porter-white-mechanical-fabric-pencil-set-with-refill/xprd1002366/
I bought one pencil with white lead and then bought the dark lead refills figuring I could just switch out the lead depending on what I'm marking. I've since realized that to save time and to avoid possibly breaking the lead while switching to the other color that I just need to buy another pencil. Buying from JoAnn's though I utilitzed my 50% off coupon and got mine at a great price and then used the 40% coupon I also had that day and bought the refill so for both those with my savings I spent less than I would have in just buying the pencil itself without a coupon. I like the ceramic lead because it erases really well from my experience so far. I've always had the worst time using those water or air erasable markers. They dry out so quickly that it's a waste of my money.

Thank you again Amanda.

I don't like to mark my quilts for quilting, but prefer to fill with paisley-ish designs or pointed swirls. One thing I like to do, is to pick a fabric from the project and come up with a filler that reflects the pattern on the fabric. I think it helps tie it all together. Oh, Amanda, I am always worried about those fabric pens. I like the Miracle Chalk. The line isn't quite as fine as I would imagine a pen makes, but it erases beautifully and if you mark incorrectly you can run an iron over it and then try again.

I am just getting ready to machine quilt for the first time. I'm going to keep it simple in the beginning, but look forward to doing some "pebble" quilting. I love that look!

Blossoms Table Runner at Sew We Quilt and a Giveaway

28
